Women’s Health in Alberta

Five things facing women’s health in Alberta were the topic of discussion on Global News Edmonton when our clinic owner, Dr. Briana Botsford appeared on the morning show recently.

Cardiovascular disease risk increases as we advance in our lifespan and decreasing estrogen levels play a role in increasing cholesterol risk. Increasing fibre and adopting a mediterranean-style diet can be helpful to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. Our registered dietitian, Katie, does a great job of supporting people with their nutrition for any health goal.

Osteoporosis and decreased bone mineral density can be improved with weight-bearing physical activity, adequate protein intake, vitamin D3 and calcium supplementation.

Metabolism changes that occur with aging are linked to decreased muscle mass, which can impact metabolic rate.

Endometriosis and iron deficiency are issues that tend to impact women in their reproductive stage. March is Endometriosis awareness month. Endometriosis can be a challenge to diagnose as the gold standard is laparoscopic surgery although ultrasound techniques are improving to diagnose this painful pelvic condition. Iron deficiency impacts many menstruating women because blood losses can often be larger than iron intake.
